Synthetic Resin: Geloy & PMMA

By now, there're two synthetic resin widely used in roofing industry. One is Geloy as we mentioned above, another is PMMA [wiki] which is also called Acrylic.

PMMA was developed in 1928 in various laboratories, and was first brought to market in 1933 under trademark Plexiglas. PMMA is applied on roofing materials earlier than Geloy, it has the same property - weatherable, which prevents roof tile from fast discoloring.

However, after several lab tests around the world, we come to the conclusion. Geloy is superior to PMMA.

Why Use Geloy ASA Roof Tile?

We have sum up the test on Geloy and PMMA in a few points.

• Geloy has better impact than PMMA in a wide range of temperature.
• Geloy has better heat resistance and cold resistance than PMMA.
• Geloy has better light blocking performance than PMMA in UV range.
• Geloy has comparable flow to PVC, so the melts can be easily matched in die, the processing is easier, and the interface is more stable than those of PMMA.
• Because of difficult processing of PMMA, the requirements of heating power, motor power, screw load, and bearing load are all increased. Because of thermo sensitivity of PMMA, the requirement of thermo control system is also increased. But there is no special requirement in Geloy case.
• PMMA is easier to crack during processing, transportation and usage than Geloy.
• The total cost of PMMA is higher than that of Geloy.
